After the preparatory seminar which was held in Belgrade in April 2008, when the forms and subject of operation in the iron and steel industry and non-ferrous metallurgy were agreed on, the first in a series of seminars was held in Sarajevo in the period: September 23 – 25 2008 supported by the MCA – UGT and ISCOD. Attendees of this seminar were colleagues of Metal Workers Trade Unions from the countries of ex Yugoslavia.

These words of the murdered Serbian Prime Minister, Z. Đinđic, depict the current situation in the UBU ''Nezavisnost'' in the best possible way. Namely, at the Session of the UBU ''Nezavisnost'' Presidency, which look like sessions of the ''Central Fatherland Administration'' of Serbian Radical Party, the appointing of the UBU ''Nezavisnost'' representative of three-party bodies was considered as the item of the agenda, which bodies fall under the UBU ''Nezavisnost'', based on already expired trade union representation.

Former unionist, Branislav Canak, carried out the roughest attack on the autonomous and independent position of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost.’’ Unprepared to settle accounts with the membership and refusal to carry out the Order of the UBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Auditing Committee concerning his income in the UBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ and three-party bodies in which he represents this Trade Union, by using the police and instructing certain representatives of the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, supported by the present Serbian tycoons, B. Canak performed a dishonorable and anti-unionist act of violence by blocking the account of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost.

VICTORY OF MWBU ‘’NEZAVISNOST’’ AND DEMOCRACY

By secret vote, 194 present delegates verified the Leading, Statutory and Auditing Committees of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ on the second day of the Congress. At their Sessions the Statutory and Auditing Committee elected the presidents with 4-year term of office. Birisic Dimitrije was appointed president of the Statutory Committee of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’, and upon constituting, the MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’ Leading Committee elected the Leadership of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’, namely, Nebojša Savić, Mileta Gujaničić, Gordana Aleksić and Negoslav Jovanovic, as Vice-Presidents of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’, and Aleksandar Todic was re-appointed Secretary of MWBU.

The second day of the VI Congress of MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ resulted in submitting a Report, electing and appointing the MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ Leadership

The VI Congress of MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ commenced with adopting the Report of the MWBU Auditing Committee by delegates of the VI Congress. In its Report the Auditing Committee stated that there was no misuse of trade union’s financial resources and that these resources were used in compliance with the MWBU Statute and Decisions. The Report of MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ Leading Committee’s Operations for the Congress period from 2004 – 2008 was also submitted at the Congress. Dragan Matic read the Report. He was a man who carried out the duty of President of the MWBU Leading Committee until September 10 2008. The Report included the following: comprehensive operations of MWBU, with special view of the economic and social status and protection of employee rights, work of the MWBU bodies, communication with government institutions and Ministries (Departments), area of membership and expanding the organization, as well as education and training of trade union members. A special part of the Report was dedicated to ’’Industrial initiative’’ which was obstructed by Branislav Canak. The results concerning international activities were presented at the end of the Report, and Negoslav Jovanovic read a Report, in the presence of Congress delegates, referring to relations between MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ and UBU ’’Nezavisnost’’. An integral part of the Report of Operations were the Reports of the Youth and Women’s Section of MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’. The Congress gave a full support to all undertaken activities and unanimoulsy adopted the Report of Operations of the MWBU ’’Nezavisnost’’ Leading Committee for the period from 2004 – 2008.

How great is metal workers’ soul, spirit and heart, it was shown by volunteer blood donor action, supported by delegates and participants in the VI Congress of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’. The women and men colleagues, members of MWBU ‘’Nezavisnost’’, blood donors for many years, showed once again that humanity was a characteristic trait of a considerable number of metal workers coming from all regions of Serbia.
